Me and My Community
In the ‘Me and My Community’ project, your child will learn about the school community and building friendships. They will explore the school grounds and find out about all the people in school who are there to help them. The Rainbow Room children will explore how they are special and unique and how everyone’s family is different. They will take part in practical activities to support them to build new friendships and explore what makes a good friend.
Supporting your child at home:
- Look at family photographs together and discuss who is part of your family and extended family.
- Look at baby photographs and talk about how they have grown.
- Look at any childhood photographs of parents and grandparents.
- Talk about the things you like to do together and places you like to go.

- Celebrate what makes them special: Enjoy your child’s favourite toys, songs, games and activities together. Notice what makes them smile and what captures their interest.
- Explore family photographs: Look at photos of family members together. Name familiar people and encourage your child to look, point, smile, gesture or use sounds to show recognition.
- Enjoy family time: Share favourite songs, play simple games or look at books together. Give your child time to respond in their own way.
- Get to know familiar people: When out and about, point out familiar people and places. Use simple words, gestures, objects or photographs to help your child recognise them.
- Encourage communication: Model simple ways to interact, such as giving, sharing and helping, and celebrate any attempts your child makes to connect with others through smiles, gestures, sounds or movements.
