Curriculum Purpose

Our curriculum advances children’s knowledge of the world by embracing the rich diversity of our school community to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of modern life.

Curriculum Rationale

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures.

At Sudbury Primary School, French is taught in KS2. The French curriculum is planned to foster the pupils' curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. It enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. Furthermore, it provides foundation for further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Our French Curriculum Overview has been planned using feedback from the pupils and is based on the statutory guidelines set out in the National Curriculum Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2 (DfE September 2013). A broad range of topics are covered to give children a wide variety of vocabulary to help them in their daily life and to support them with a smooth transition to learning languages at secondary school.

We aim for pupils to be able to understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, key features and patterns of the language, how to apply these (for instance to build sentences), and how these differ from or are similar to English.

Our objectives in teaching French align with the National Curriculum, by aiming to ensure all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
