Our Project-based Curriculum

Curriculum Purpose

Our curriculum advances children’s knowledge of the world by embracing the rich diversity of our school community to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of modern life.

At Sudbury Primary School we have carefully designed our curriculum to ensure that it is enriched with engaging purposeful and quality learning experiences. Our curriculum provides broad and balanced opportunities which aim to drive a life-long love of learning as well as positive learning behaviours which help our children to grow as individuals as well as learners.

This half term we are introducing Sudbury’s very own creative, project-based curriculum, in line with the National Curriculum. These projects, known as Imaginative Learning Projects, will provide a rich menu or exciting and motivating learning activities that make links between subjects, with a clear purpose and audience.

This new project-based curriculum is underpinned with child-centred pedagogy called ‘The Four Cornerstones’:

Engage
Hook learners in with a memorable experience.
Set the scene and provide the context for learning.
Ask questions to find out children’s interests.
Spark children’s curiosity using interesting starting points.

Develop

Explore themes, concepts and facts for deeper understanding and knowledge.
Demonstrate new skills and allow time for consolidation.
Provide creative opportunities for making and doing.
Deliver reading, writing and talking across the curriculum.

Innovate and Share
Provide rich and stimulating scenarios that encourage creative thinking.
Enable children to apply previously learned skills.
Encourage enterprise and independent thinking.
Provide opportunities for collaborative working and problem solving.

Express
Provide an environment for reflective talk.
Create opportunities for shared evaluation.
Celebrate and share children’s success.
Identify next steps.

For more information on what your child will be learning about, please go to the school website - Children - Year groups: https://www.sudburyprimary.co.uk/year-groups-1/

Here you will find a Knowledge Organiser which contains all of the essential information your child will learn throughout the project and remember as they move through school.
